Sunday Sounds: Lorde

photo cred: link

Not sure if you have watched the new Mockingjay trailer featuring Lorde's Yellow Flicker Beat but I am obsessed. In case you haven't seen it, here's the trailer or preview or whatever it is.

The song just sets the mood for the entire movie. It also puts me into this state of mind where I'm a angst-y teen in goth mode. Reminds me of those years of my life.

Enjoy!

Sunday Sounds: Sam Smith

Is it too late for a Sunday Sounds? Nah. We had a 3.5 hour rode trip to LA on Friday so I got to listen to a ton of new music and some oldies but goodies. One of my favorite songs is Sam Smith's new single (I think?), Restart. I only liked it in the beginning but I just looked up the lyrics and now I'm absolutely in LOVE. Seriously, I think we've all been there before. Without further ado...

It was a Monday night when you told me it was over babe
And by the Friday night, I knew that I would be okay
Don't say it was a good thing
Don't say it was the right thing to do
Don't say it was the best thing for the both of us
When I'm the one playing the fool

What do you want from me when I just wanna restart
You keep coming back for me when you're the one who tore us apart
And the truth is I'm better on my own
And I'm the one to leave it apart
So let me restart
So let me restart
So let me restart

You've been lightin' up my phone
Worried that I'll be alone tonight
Wanna make sure that I'm fine
But baby you're not on my mind, no more
I know it was the best thing for the both of us
Cause you're the one who looks like a fool

What do you want from me when I just wanna restart
You keep coming back for me when you're the one who tore us apart
And the truth is I'm better on my own
And I'm the one to leave it apart
So let me restart
So let me restart
So let me restart

So let me restart

What do you want from me when I just wanna restart
You keep coming back for me when you're the one who tore us apart
And the truth is I'm better on my own
And I'm the one to leave it apart
So let me restart
So let me restart
So let me restart
So let me restart
So let me restart
Hmmmm

Sunday Sounds: Young Summer

Last week the opportunity to attend a live performance at the Soda Bar by Young Summer. I had never heard her stuff before. Tony played one of her songs for me and it seemed like it would be something right up my alley so we decided to go. I ended up totally loving her. Bobbie Allen's voice is a dream. Her voice is very ethereal. She sounds like what I imagine Sara Bareilles would sound like singing Lana Del Rey's songs. Anyways, check out some of my favorites below and watch for when she'll be you area! I believe she's currently on tour.

Sunday Sounds: Joywave

joywave live at 94.9 fm indie jam

We recently went to San Diego's 94.9 FM Independence Jam and I discovered a new love. I'm the kind of person that knows what I like when it comes to music and Joywave is something right down my alley. I just acquired their EP and literally every song on there is amazing. My favorite on the EP How Do You Feel? is probably "Now". It sounds very early 2000's and the lead singer kind of sounds like the lead singer from Phoenix in this particular song. By early 2000's I mean that I can totally picture it being played on Laguna Beach or The OC as the episode wraps up and they show a pan over the beach lol. (Yes, if I wasn't doing pharmacy, I would want to choose the music that gets played in movies, although my music catalogue is pretty limited so I probably wouldn't be very good). Have a listen to their EP below. "Tongues" sounds like Indie Pop with some Electronic influence so if you're into that stuff, you might want to listen to that.
"Somebody New" is probably my second favorite on their EP. It's a flashback to my "goth" days in middle school and makes me want to be in "The Craft" or something lol. (You know me and music that triggers a certain emotion or memory.)

Hope you enjoy this edition of Sunday Sounds and have a great remainder to your weekend!

Sunday Sounds: Broods

photo cred: link

The return of Sunday Sounds! Recently I've discovered some new music so I feel revived. One of my current favorites right now is Coattails by Broods. Love love love. I heard them on the Pandora Chvrches station and fell in love with this song. Definitely check them out.

Sunday Sounds: Young The Giant

I'm no longer doing my Bonnaroo Sunday Sounds but I'm coming to you this weekend with this little gem. How did you come across this song, you say? Well, if you look at my Shazam log, I've Shazam-ed this song a total of 5 times since being back from Seattle. Today, after getting out of work, I get into the car and as soon as the radio comes on, I go to grab my phone. I immediately hit my Shazam button. Guess what song pops up... Young The Giant - It's About Time. So ok... I'm officially obsessed with this song. Check it out and maybe you'll join my repeat-1 support group.

Sunday Sounds: Bonnaroo 2014 Series - Warpaint

photo cred: http://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/

I heard Warpaint's "Keep It Healthy" on my way home from work and absolutely fell in love. I would highly recommend their entire new self-titled album with my favorites being "Love is to Die", "Keep It Healthy", and "Drive". One of their older songs that I discovered is "Undertow". It's one of those songs where you just wonder where have you been all this time?!

Sunday Sounds: Bonnaroo 2014 Series - The Naked and Famous

photo cred: http://cheeseontoast.co.nz

One of my biggest regrets for Coachella this year was missing The Naked and Famous. After a few days of Coachella withdrawals, I went on Coachella's YouTube page and found that they still had the video of the Young Blood performance. I feel like that song just encompasses Coachella. Anyway, making an extra effort to see them at Bonnaroo!

Sunday Sounds: Bonnaroo 2014 Series - Frank Ocean

photo cred: earmilk.com

There was a time when every time a song would come on the radio or a show, I would Shazam it and it would be something from Frank Ocean. His stuff is absolutely amazing. My favorites are Pyramid and Thinking About You. For those of us that watched Gossip Girl, you may remember some of his tracks from their final season. I remember watching one episode and literally 3-4 songs that player were by Frank Ocean. Have a listen below and I hope you enjoy!

Sunday Sounds: Bonnaroo 2014 Series - Sam Smith

Wowza. After the performances on SNL (which were complete amazeballs), everyone has been buzzing about this guy. Sam Smith's performances seriously made me tear up. Such an amazing empathetic singer. His demeanor is also so humble and shy but when he starts performing, he's completely transformed and it's amazing to see. We had the opportunity to see him in December at the Troubadour in Los Angeles, CA

Sunday Sounds: Coachella 2014 Series - BANKS

When someone remakes a classic like Aaliyah's "Are You That Somebody" and gets praised for her rendition, it's a pretty high compliment. Introducing BANKS. Listen to her rendition below and judge for yourself. It is a bit different but also amazing. She looks like a cross between Sara Bareilles and Natalie Portman (aka beautiful lol) and sounds like what Sara Bareilles would sound like if she decided to make Indie music. Her music is what I would put into my "Funk" playlist which is just a bunch of songs that I would play when I'm feeling in funky mood (i.e. can't decide what to listen to). I can just imagine "This is What It Feels Like" being played during the club scene in the Matrix when Neo meets Trinity for the first time.

Sunday Sounds: Coachella 2014 Series - HAIM

Top of the morning to ya'lls. Coming to you this Sunday morning with yet another Coachella artist. This week I'm featuring HAIM. After the summer festival season ended, there was speculation that HAIM would be a performer in this year's Coachella. Their sound is unique and the three ladies remind me of my Hanson days. Here are a couple of favorites. Check them out on their Soundcloud page.

Sunday Sounds: Coachella 2014 Series - The 1975

This week I'm featuring The 1975. So I first heard about this group through Missglamorazzi. She was talking about how much she loved The xx and she also mentioned that she had been obsessing over 1975. Now, the first time I listened to them I wasn't that obsessed. However, I guess repetition works (har har Tanya!) because now I really like a few of their songs. Here are some of my favorites.

Chocolate (probably their most popular song)

Sex

Settle Down
(parts of the song sound like Panic! at the Disco's lead singer... like the chorus)

Bonus: Phantogram - Fall in Love
I know they aren't playing Coachella but just because I'm completely infatuated with this song, I'm going to add it in. They've started playing it on the radio and I just totally jam out to it in the car (yup, I'm that crazy chick in the car dancing away lol).

Sunday Sounds: Coachella 2014 Series - The Naked and Famous

Sorry I've been missing the past couple of weeks. I was super ahead and then I got into a rut of listening to super old stuff and not Coachella related. Now I'm back and I can't believe Coachella is a little over a month away! Crazy! Anywhos, on to the music!

One of my favorite stations to listen to on Pandora is the Chvrches station. I've found so many good artists through that station including today's Sunday Sounds Coachella artist, The Naked and Famous. I'm pretty sure you've heard these tunes somewhere before. Good stuff I tell ya, good stuff. When I first heard them, I kept thinking they were Passion Pit (who was at Coachella in 2013) but I can kind of tell the difference now lol. Again, I'll let the music speak for itself.

Young Blood (one of my absolute favorites):

Sunday Sounds: Coachella 2014 Series - MS MR

Awhile back we had gotten tickets to see MS MR. They were running a promotion on the site for $0.91 per ticket. Including fees, the tickets ended up being around 5 bucks. We didn't end up going since they had to reschedule the show to a date that we had a scheduling conflict. That's when I started listening to them. One of my favorite songs from them (not listed below since I couldn't find embed the song on here) is Bones. Here are some of my other favorites below. Happy listening!

Sunday Sounds: Coachella 2014 Series - Alesso

"Can we freeze karma and surrender our rights and wrongs
Can we just for a night let the stars decide where we belong
Maybe heaven right now is a devil or angel away
That won't change
Together we vow that our colors will sparkle the faith"

For awhile at work we would go in 2 hours before we opened to get started in the morning to just set up for a good day and coffee wasn't really enough to wake us up so we'd always play the Levels by Avicii radio station on Pandora just to get our blood pumping. There was one song that I remembered that I kept running to my phone to see what it was. Turns out it was "Calling" by Sebastian Ingrosso and Alesso. Absolutely love the song. What I also love about the song is that it is such a great song for a video montage of sorts. I wanted to use it as the background of my Coachella 2013 memories video but I still haven't had a chance to make it lol. Hopefully I can use some of his songs in this years' video since he'll actually be there. I also feel like his songs really capture a journey and the energy at Coachella. I absolutely cannot wait to see him live!!! Below are a few of my favorites from Alesso. If I Lose Myself from 2:00 to 2:10 really reminds me of Space Mountain for some weird reason (the background noise that makes it sound a little ghoul-y). City of Dreams has been a recent favorite of mine and is currently on repeat 1.

One of my favorite videos to watch of their road to Coachella featuring snippets with Ryan Tedder. I love how it shows some of the behind the scenes to how they collaborated on the song as well as their energy level in creating a masterpiece. Definitely worth the trip over to VEVO on YouTube.

Sunday Sounds: Coachella 2014 Series - Jhene Aiko

First time I heard of Jhene Aiko was on Drake's track From Time on his album Nothing Was The Same. I really love her voice. It brings me back to the days of Ashanti and Ja Rule (those were my jams back in the days lol). On my drive back to LA recently I heard her song "The Worst" on Power106 and fell in love. Performing on Sunday, here are some of my favorite tracks from Jhene Aiko.

The Worst
"Please don't take this personal
But you ain't shit
And you weren't special
Til I made you so"
My favorite lines in the song. It's reminiscent of unrequited love and believe me I'm a real expert in that area. Just a lesson that sometimes through no fault of our own, we put people on a pedestal when we love/like them so much when really when you look back you can't seem to figure out why you liked them at all.

Sunday Sounds: Coachella 2014 Series - Chvrches

In response to the recent unveiling of the Coachella Line-up, Sunday Sounds from now until Coachella weekend 1 will be dedicated to Coachella artists. One of the biggest problems with me and Coachella is that for most artists I only know 1 song from the artist. One of my goals for doing this Coachella Series of Sunday Sounds is so that it'll force me to check out more artists. Of course I won't be able to get through all the artists and I might not like all of the artists either but I'm going to try to get those ears twerking... I mean working overtime lol ;P.

This week I'm going back to an old favorite of mine. From the moment I saw them live, I had an inkling that they were going to headed to Coachella. I'll be honest, before I saw them live, I had no idea who they were and I hadn't really listened to them at all. However, just seeing them live once was enough to get me to like most of their songs. Now I even have their Pandora station on repeat. The band is Chvrches and I'll let the music speak for itself. They will be performing on Saturday at Coachella. Here are some of my favorites from them as well as some of the live footage I have from their show in San Diego at the Belly Up Tavern. Check out that post here.

My favorite lines:
"I can sell you lies, you can't get enough
Make a true believer of, anyone anyone anyone
I can call you up if I feel alone, I can feed your dirty mind
Like I know like, like I know, what you want"
