day 89

day 89 (wednesday - march 30th): day 2 of internal med
So today was Day 2 of internal medicine. Went slightly smoother than Day 1 being that I get the hang of aminoglycoside dosing now. I still feel like a dozo though being that I don't commit to memory any of the guidelines. I got to make an intervention today which was pretty cool. So every week I go through antibiotics and make sure they are dosed correctly and the culture and sensitivies show that we are using a drug that the organism is sensitive to. So yesterday we found a patient on ertapenem with cultures pointing to Strep B. Today the sensitivities came back with the organism being sensitive to ampicillin. So my preceptor sent a note to the doctor telling him to change ertapenem to ampicillin :). We'll see if he'll actually change the drug.

After that, I went to my regional meeting which too a super long time. Then after that I went to happy hour. Now I'm back at home but I feel soooooo super sleepy :(. Probably going to call it and night and then study tomorrow morning for didactics (which is just another term for quiz).

day 88 - first day of internal med

day 88 (tuesday - march 29th): first day of internal med
So today was the first day of internal med - spinal cord injury with my preceptor Rebecca. Got to the VA at 8am to get my access code to use the computers. This took 2 hours but I was glad we went because I got to catch up with the girls I met yesterday who are all super nice! So after that, I paged my preceptor and she met me in the resident's room. After that we went back to her office, took a tour of the 3 spinal cord injury wards, and then got started with some antibiotic dosing checks. So I found out that I know absolutely NOTHING about PK dosing lol. My preceptor basically gave me a speed review of all PK things. So another thing I learned today was to embrace the saying, "I don't know... I'll look it up and get back to you." I reviewed aminoglycoside dosing later on when I went to Starbucks with Judy. I also tried to read over this article about HIT, which is heparin-induced-thrombocytopenia. Lots of stuff to do for this rotation :( Let's hope I survive!

Hope ya'lls have a great week!

P.S. Since it's Tony's birthday today, he's the guest blogger :P and here's what he thinks I do all day lol.

day 83-84

day 83 (thursday - march 24th): potluck at the VA
Second to the last day at the VA in Downtown LA. The preceptors had a potluck for us and me and the USC student got a cake for our preceptors. Nothing spectacular happened today.

day 84 (friday - march 25th): last day of rotation 5
Last day at the VA. Did our usual meter class in the morning and then Tony, the USC student had to leave so I spent the rest of the day cleaning up all the unfinished work we had with finishing up patients. I also took this time to print out all my paperwork for my next rotation at the VALB lol. I ended up filling out most of the paperwork and then my main preceptor came back from the USC Clerkship Fair (which is this fair they have for the USC students that tells them about the rotations available at each site) and so she gave my evaluation. I ended up getting an A (yay!) haha. But I had to do this SOAP note for the final and I got a 5.5 out of 10 lol. Good thing it was only worth 10% of my grade. For my case presentation one of the "constructive criticisms" was to say "you know" less bahahahaha. I try really hard to cut down the "likes" in my presentations but I guess I let the "you knows" slip haha.

I ended leaving at 4pm and started going to run my errands. I really like having one of the weekdays off because it gives me a chance to go to the bank, post office, etc. So I went to the bank to deposit some of the check I had from Ebates and a rebate from Costco for my contacts. Then I went to Supercuts. I got my haircut for free because if you get 8 haircuts, your 9th haircut is free :). Everything was going great until I was done with my haircut and I realized that I locked my keys in my car!! Hasn't happened in almost 2 years!! But yeah, I had to call my dad to bring me the spare keys.

After that little obstacle, I went home and changed to go out with Reena and Lois. We ended up going to this place off of Atlantic and Garvey called "The Open Door". I would not recommend going here unless you are extremely anorexic lol. There's like no food to eat!! Their happy our cocktails were yummy though. We got a carafe of their Mango Cocktail and Peach cocktail, both of which were delicious. We would have drank more but their food selection was so small! We were still hungry after that so we walked over the Thai Paradise off of Atlantic and had 2 small items. I guess we overestimated how hungry we were because we ended up having up leftovers haha. Then we walked over to Half & Half. I really like the Atlantic Half & Half because there isn't a huge crowd like the friggin San Gabriel one! wtf!

We called it a night after that and I pretty much got home and knocked the freak out.

Post to be continued....

day 80-82

When I got home on Saturday, I got this Thank You card from Anh & Gary :)

day 80 (monday - march 21st): patient handout due
Just another Monday. Nothing too special happened today except 3 pharmacists called in sick today. Went to Starbucks to study after dinner. I had to work on my patient presentation which was going to be due on Wednesday morning. Not much else happened.

day 81 (tuesday - march 22nd):
So I was supposed to have my final exam today for my rotation but they moved it to Wednesday. Nothing much happened. I got to interview a bunch or patients for the Smoking Cessation clinic which was fun. After work I went to study at Starbucks again except this time Judy joined me. I was really cutting it close with my presentation. I left Starbucks at 10pm and I still had 1 more disease state that I had to work on.

day 82 (wednesday - march 23rd): patient case presentation
Today was my patient case presentation which went HORRIBLY! Ok I'm not even joking around. So I get to work 30 minutes early and I'm looking over my presentation and looking at the finishing touches which are fine. I get into work to print out my lecture slides and I realized that the powerpoint presentation I sent myself didn't have ANY of the erectile dysfunction slides that I had worked on when I got home. I guess when I sent myself the presentation, I hadn't pushed "save" so it sent the presentation without any of the changes I made after I got home. After that I had to use my crappy version of the presentation that I had made for myself with all my little notes on what to talk about and such. So horrible. Then, they asked me all these clinical questions and of course I suck at anything clinical. Which is probably why I will die at internal med (my next rotation). It was just horrible. I felt like I was getting beat up in a fight. And then to make matters worse, I had this one patient that yelled at me and told me to shut-up on the phone when I was trying to go over his coumadin with him. He went into how he wanted to transferred because he was sick and tired of answering the same questions over and over again. Like, ok I get it. Everytime I call, I ask the same questions because it's standard procedure. He was getting so belligerent with me and he kept saying "are you just about done yet?!" And he threatened to hang up on me. I ended up getting a little teary-eyed and had to go to the restroom to calm myself down.

At 3pm I had to take the final exam which me and the other student thought was going to SOAPing out a case on coumadin since all we did was coumadin clinic. Turned out that it was SOAPing up 9 disease states which I was unfamiliar with :/. It was pretty much horrible.

After work I had to keep telling myself to go pick up the cake for my preceptors. It turned out pretty nice.

Ended the day very well though :). Ended up going to see Beauty and the Beast at The Pantages with Judy which was friggin awesome!! Loved it!! Seats were super nice in orchestra! Wish I could see it again before it leaves. I ended up buying a shirt, a key chain and a program. I really liked how they made Gaston super funny because I usually skip all the Gaston parts when I watch the movie. He's pretty annoying in the movie lol.

hope everyone has a great week! last rotation starts tomorrow baby!!
7 more weeks until graduation!!!

day 71 (saturday, march 12th)
Tony came up to see me this weekend and as always, we started off the weekend with some grub. Ever since I've been back in SoCal, I've wanted to try Savoy Kitchen (everyone aka Judy was raving about it haha). I'm not exactly the biggest fan of Hainam Chicken or eating chicken (besides fried chicken) when I go out to eat because places always cook their chicken so dry! But oh-em-gee their chicken is soooooooooo friggin good! It's so tender and moist (bahahaha). After eating we went to Tapioca Express and got some boba and just hung out for a bit. For dinner, I had purchased a deal from LivingSocial for The Bungalow Club on Melrose which was going to expire soon so we decided to give it a try (it was more me forcing Tony to try this place out lol). The place itself is pretty cool but the food was a little on the mediocre side. We ended up getting In-N-Out at the In-N-Out off of the 210 on Santa Anita. I seriously LOVE In-N-Out but this was seriously the slowest In-N-Out in life! And it's the worst when you get into one lane and the other lane ends up being super fast and you're just like "FML" haha. Anyways, we ended up staying at the DoubleTree in Monrovia which is super friggin nice. They have these cabana things outside by the pool and their rooms are super modern looking. Plus, they come with a microwave and microfridge!

day 72 (sunday, march 13th)
I was still craving waffles from last weekend so we went to the Roscoe's in Pasadena (I had no idea there was one in Pasadena). Didn't have to wait that long and it was funny 'cause when I ate the waffles at first, I was like "ehh... nothing special" and then I had a bite of the chicken (the batter is super delicious!) and then went back to the waffles, the combination was super delicious!! The waffle really calmed my mouth down from the hot sauce. After eating at Roscoe's, we decided to go see a movie and I guess it was my turn to choose so I picked Red Riding Hood (lol the previews looked good ok! lol). I really thought it was going to be good but it ended up being super cheesy (which I usually like haha) but I think what did it for me was the director. I had no idea who directed it so when the movie first started, I was like hmm... these scenery really reminds me of Twilight... and then BAM! Directed by Catherine Hardwicke! And then I knew it was going to be an interesting movie haha. The two guys in the movie were hott though :). Went to get dinner at Mr. Baguette, which I've never had (I never bought into the hype when there was a craze in high school). It was actually pretty good and the baguette was actually quite large, surprisingly.

day 73 (monday, march 14th)
Just another day at work and then I headed to the gym after work. I was really surprised by how busy it was. Usually I just go for the classes but I wanted to do some cardio on the elliptical and all of them were in use so I ended up doing weights.

day 74 (tuesday, march 15th)
Yet another day at work except I helped out with the smoking cessation clinic and I thought it was really surprising how most of the patients I saw were all on the patch but they still smoked (you're not supposed to smoke especially when you're on the patch). I feel really bad for the patients because they seem like they genuinely want to quit smoking but it's so hard :(.

day 75 (wednesday, march 16th)
Went to work as usual and worked until lunch and then headed to the VA in Long Beach for my meeting. I ended up getting lunch at L&L which I haven't had in a really long time (since I was back in Stockton) and then headed to my meeting. After the meeting, Tanya's twin sister was in town so we went to get Happy Hour at Yardhouse. I got the Chicken Lettuce Wraps which come with 3 different sauces. It actually surprised me because it was quite delicious.

When I got home, I got something from one of my favorite girls :).

Other than that, I didn't do much for the rest of the day.

day 76 (thursday, march 17th)
Happy St. Pattie's Day! Went to work as usual and then went to Starbucks with Judy to try to get some work done. And of course, after Starbucks, you've gotta make a trip to Target :).

day 77 (friday, march 18th)
Went to work as usual. After work I drove straight to Irvine to meet up with Tony. We went to eat dinner at BCD Tofu House in that one plaza where 85C Bakery is at. Apparently there's this revolving sushi place there that was hip hoppin'. BCD Tofu House was delish as usual and very filling. After filling our stomachs, we headed to Disneyland. We ended up parking in the employee lot because I guess the park was so crowded. We started off by going to the World of Disney Store where I purchased some items for my preceptor. Met up with Tanya, Jason, and Tanya's family for a little bit and then we headed to Disneyland since California Adventure was already closed. We were quite the picture whores this time around.

day 78 (saturday, march 18th)
Started the morning off by going to the Rooster Cafe. We Yelped the place and apparently their Breakfast Burrito is the shiznit. So I ended up getting the Breakfast Burrito and Tony got the Texas Toast Combo. Their Breakfast Burrito was delish! (and I don't even like burritos!) Their Portuguese sausage is sooooo good! After being fatties, we went to 85C Bakery to get some desserts. Waited in line for about an hour lol. We got our stuff and just people watched for awhile.

day 79 (sunday, march 19th)
Pretty much bummed it the entire day. I've been watching TV the entire day and there's been two National Weather Service warnings already :/. One was a Flash Flood Warning and the other was a Severe Thunderstorm Warning :(. Scary stuff :/.

Now that I'm finally caught up, I'm going to get some din din :)

Have a great week ya'lls!

day 63-70

day 64-65 (saturday, march 5th- sunday, march 6th): san diego getaway
Headed down to San Diego for the weekend. Started off the weekend off right by getting lunch at Miami Grill. Tony and I both got the Jamaican jerk chicken (it's friggin delicious! and EXTREMELY spicy... the wasabi up-your-nose-makes-you-want-to-die type lol). The restaurant is actually in this outdoor mall so we walked around the mall and got a little gelato and really enjoyed the weather (it was nice and sunny that day and I'm definitely getting extremely pasty from being indoors all day). I ended up getting this XL men's hobo looking sweater from Macy's for $16. Such a deal! Ate dinner at Tofu House on Convoy St. I was seriously amazed because it was the first time I went to a Korean restaurant where there was no Korean on the menu. Asian restaurants usually have descriptions on times in that native language and English so I was like, "this must be a super Americanized place" haha. I got to meet a few of Tony's friends and we headed to Soju Town (this Korean *obvious lol* karaoke place). There was a private birthday party but we were still seated. It was hilarious watching drunk people sing haha. After that we called it a night.

this is before we even started drinking lol
The next day I was majorly (apparently majorly is not a word on blogger because there's a red squiggly when I'm typing it lol) craving waffles so Tony suggested this really good breakfast place called "The Mission". They did have some yummy food although no waffles were to be found on the menu. They did have pancakes though so all was well in the world lol. Although they ran out of strawberries (blasphemy!) so I had to eat just banana pancakes which were good. Their Mexican Hot Chocolate was supposed to be really good so I tried that but it was too sweet so I traded with Tony :). We decided to go see a movie before I was going to drive back up to LA. The last time we saw a movie together I got to choose (I chose No Strings Attached which was super cute!) so I reluctantly (what?! I have only child syndrome) let him choose this one. So we ended up watching Rango because according to the critics (which I hate listening to) said to "See It!". It was pretty funny but it was a little slow at parts. After that I made my way back home and finished the off by unpacking all my stuff and getting ready for Monday.

spotted this beauty at hot topic haha

day 66 (monday, march 7th): just another manic monday... not really
Nothing happened today... just another day at work.

day 67 (tuesday, march 8th): joslyn center brown bag
For this rotation we had 2 different brown bag events. Today we had our first brown bag event at the Joslyn Center in Burbank. Saw a few patients but spent quite awhile talking to each one. It's interesting because patients didn't really have questions about their prescription drugs. They mostly had questions about vitamins.  I literally (or is it figuratively according to Ted Mosby? lol) have a big question mark above my head when it comes to vitamins. But yeah, after work I had to work on my drug presentation on Pitavastatin (Livalo) so I went to Starbucks to study with Judy. Other than that, nothing significant happened.

day 68 (wednesday, march 9th)
Today was one of those days where everything's fine and then all of a sudden "BAM!" hit by a bus. Basically I was at work and me and Tony are usually kik-ing each other throughout the day and he mentioned something that just irked me. After I got home, I called Judy and she made me feel better about the situation. Sometimes when I'm irked, I'm not exactly the most logical person and so Judy's like my USB with a bunch of logic files that I transfer over to my brain when I'm most illogical haha. And then it ended up that all my irked-ness was really for nothing.

day 69 (thursday, march 10th)
Busy day at work so I didn't really get to work on my drug presentation. I ended up going to Starbucks and spending the rest of my night working on the presentation. I ended up going to sleep around 1am (which is pretty late for me since I sleep around 10pm these days). The next morning I woke up startled 'cause I realized that an entire slide that went over the design of one of the clinical trials was completely blank because I was going to make a chart but I forgot. Luckily, the study actually had the study design included in a supplemental document so I was able to just copy and paste the picture (whew!).

day 70 (friday, march 11th) - judgement day for pitavastatin & tsunami
Today was my 45 minute presentation on pitavastatin which I thought went ok. It was just a little daunting because the preceptors asked me so many questions :/ but all in all, it went well. I had so many things to do today. After my drug presentation, I had to do the glucometer class. At the end of the day, we also had to demonstrate how to use the Novolog Flexpen to nurses and other staff. Once I got home I pretty much just bummed around for the rest of the night. I pretty much had palpitations for the rest of the day after my presentation so it was nice to just relax.

The pharmacy manager got lunch catered for us which was super nice. So for lunch we sat around in the conference room and watched Tsunami coverage. On Thursday, I believe, Japan was hit by 8.9 earthquake which led to the tsunami. Watching the coverage was crazy. I can't even imagine what it was like watching it live or being in Japan. It reminded me of 9-11 during high school where every class we went to we were just watching the news to see what was going on.

Alrighties friends, I realized I'm still a week behind but I have this huge patient case presentation
that I need to work on. I will update on my breaks :)

day 52-63

day 52 (monday - feb 21, 2011)
So nice to have a day off! So much stuff going on this week though. I've been really wanting to scrapbook but my paper cutter has been cutting crooked so I wanted to go to Walmart (I also needed some other items as well). I ended up having lunch with Christina at Sushi of Naples in Pasadena and then we went to Walmart. Sometimes when I don't go to Walmart for a long time, I forget how friggin ghetto it is!! So we go to the restroom and we noticed that one of the stall doors was open and there were 2 other people were in front of us so I was thinking that the stall was probably broken. After the two people in front of us went into some of the other stalls, we were next. Then one by one people started coming out of that open stall. It was a mother with her 5 kids. They were all in  one stall. I mean I get it, your kids need to pee and you don't want to use up all the stalls and you don't want to leave anyone outside but c'mon!! And then it was just so crowded!

So a really big pet peeve of mine is when people try to get the closest spot possible. And I don't mean you go to the front row and happen to find a spot, yay-- do a little victory dance. I mean those lurkers that go around the parking lot maybe 50 times trying to find a spot in the front row.

day 53 (tuesday - feb 22, 2011)
So one of the many interviews I had on Friday was at Target and for Target you have to take this 1-2 hour assessment. I thought it would just be like any other assessment where you answer questions about stealing stuff, etc etc. My friends kind of warned me that it was going to be long with sequences and stuff so I was slightly prepared but once I started the assessment, I was literally blown away! It was 112 questions and like half of it was sequences. I felt like I was taking an IQ test more than an assessment for a job. I don't want to disclose too much (for that one person that reads my blog lol) but yeah. There was one sequence I couldn't figure out and I had to enlist Tony's help, since he used to be a math teacher lol (gotta utilize those resources you know? lol).

day 54 (wednesday - feb 23, 2011)
Went to the Linkin Park concert today at the Staples Center. Went to work as usual and then went home to get ready. Tanya met me at my house and we headed to the Staples Center. We ate at ESPN Zone because the lines everywhere were so freakin' long. I can't believe we spent $70 at dinner! At friggin ESPN zone! And it wasn't even that great! So I ordered this BBQ Short Ribs thing and I told them to sub the mashed potatoes for rice and guess what I got? I got ONION RINGS!!! wth?! Apparently at ESPN Zone, onion rings = rice and those two items are interchangeable.

The Prodigy opened for Linkin Park which we didn't get to see because we were eating. We got to see the tail end of the show where they played that song from the Matrix. But anyways, Linkin Park has to be one of the best concerts I've ever been too. I think it's 2nd only to Keane and the only reason Keane is #1 is because we were right up next to the stage. They sound just like the CD and especially being a rock group, they sounded amazing. The sound quality was amazing. I wish Paramore's concerts had better sound quality because I think they would sound amazing too. Their new CD is actually pretty good although the random people talking in the beginning and ends of the songs are a little weird.

After Prodigy before Linkin Park came on
Linkin Park time!

In The End...

day 55 (thursday - feb 24, 2011)
I had to make a Diabetes Patient Education presentation with the other student doing Amcare in the morning today. It went pretty well considering I didn't even look at the slides until right before the presentation being that I was at the Linkin Park concert. Just one patient asked me a question that kind of caught me off-guard. So I was going on about how 7 million people are living undiagnosed with diabetes and he looked like he had question so I asked whether he had a question. He was just like "If those people are undiagnosed, how did you figure out that number?". Beats me lol. I was just like, "Through the use of some statistical analysis, they can probably figure it out." lol. I'm great lol.

day (friday - feb 25, 2011)
Today was the highly anticipated career fair in Irvine at the Embassy Suites. I ended up interviewing with Walmart, Kaiser, CVS, Walgreens, Target, and RiteAid. I was only originally signed up for 4 interviews but I ended up signing up to interview with Walmart and CVS. All my interviews went fine besides my Target one which went horribly. Walmart was a surprisingly hard interview in that they made you counsel. Kaiser was super chill especially because I had a fellow Bruin interview me. CVS wanted me to work in Porterville which is a little North of Bakersfield. Walgreens literally said they weren't hiring except they had 1 spot left in Bakersfield. There were rumors going around that Target was the only one hiring and their interview was the hardest. RiteAid was a chill interview with Conrad. Anyways, after all my interviews I met up with Tony to eat at Chaparosa Grill. I bought the Living Social deal ($20 for $40 worth of food). It was sooooo much food. I originally got the coupon because I wanted to try their Jamaican Jerk Chicken but it turned out not to be the same as the one from Miami Grill. Their food was pretty good but definitely not as good as Miami Grill.

Later on that night we went to Disneyland and CA Adventures. I got to play on Toy Story and Tony finally beat me :(

I also got to see the back of World of Color. I had no idea that they added a Tron part to the World of Color show which means that I have to go watch it again :). It started raining pretty hard and my Uggs were completely soaked so I went to the Disney store and asked for 2 plastic bags and wrapped my feet in the bags so that they wouldn't get wet hehe (like how Lauren told me to do for snow boarding). we ended up going on Haunted Mansion, Snow White's Scary Adventure (which I hadn't gone on before because all my friends were like "It's scary!" which it was!! Can't believe it's a little kids ride. I would have for sure came out crying), Mr. Toad's yada yada ride (I forget the name lol). After all that, we still hadn't eaten dinner so we got KFC haha. Gotta love my fried chicken.

day 57 (saturday - feb 26, 2011)
Went to eat at Coco's for the first time. Their breakfast is actually pretty good. I think this was a super lazy day so I didn't do much. I think I was probably working on my Hypertension discussion handout.

day 58 (sunday - feb 27, 2011)
In celebration of Kelly's Birthday we went to eat dim sum at this place on Atlantic called "Elite". Their stuff is pretty fresh and good but I think most of the old school Asians don't like it because they like the pushing around of the carts and this place you just order on the piece of paper. It was really nice catching up with friends. I haven't had dim sum in a super long time since there's always some sort of family disagreement or I've always been gone during the weekends when they would go. After dim sum, I still had a lot of work to do so I went to study at Starbucks with Kelly, Sam, and Ana. I stayed there from 1:30 to 6pm. I think it's the longest I've ever stayed at Starbucks when I don't have an imminent exam to study for.

day 59 (monday - feb 28, 2011)
Went to work as usual. Last day of February! February totally flew by. Went to Starbucks to study for a bit with Pearl. Pretty insignificant day otherwise.

day 60 (tuesday - march 1, 2011)
Again another pretty insignificant day. Went to Starbucks with Judy and sent out Thank You letters to my interviewers. Tried to do other stuff but got too distracted.

day 61 (wednesday - march 2, 2011)
Went to work until noon since I had my meeting in Long Beach. Got lunch at Cha for Tea. Ate some sweet butter toast for lunch which was delicious but this place put way too much butter and sugar (which is probably why it was so good lol but near the end it got a little sickening). After our meeting we went to Niko Niko Sushi for Happy Hour. We're all trying to "train" for our Vegas Retreat from April 8-10 'cause apparently ever since rotations started, we've all become weaksauce. It was definitely a fun night trying to pick our preceptor of the year.

day 62 (thursday - march 3, 2011)
I didn't do anything special today so I'll go ahead and just talk about what happened to my poor patients. First, someone stole my patient's cane! Poor guy was limping all over :(. I was like that's like someone stealing your glasses! I was thinking "Who would do such a thing?!" but then I guess canes are expensive. One of my other patients got his phone stolen! So sad!

day 63 (friday - march 4, 2011)
Today me and the other student I'm with at the VA had to teach a glucometer class. I totally messed up the part about the lancing device because I was like "You push this button so the needle will poke you" and my preceptor was like "The other button!" whoopsies! After work I went to TKB for the first time in over 9 weeks! I pretty much only did TKB for 30 minutes because I was dying (I'm still deathly sore today and it's been 3 days already). After TKB I completely knocked out after showering.

Alright peeps, I'm outtie. Something very fun in the works ;)
